520 West 28th Street

520 West 28th Street remains one of the most iconic and technically demanding facade projects in New York City. Designed by Zaha Hadid Architects for her first building in the US, the High Line complex features striking blackened stainless steel metal panels that are mounted to a unitized curtain wall system fabricated in Italy. The building's sculptural, undulating forms and innovative envelope design presented significant coordination challenges during both fabrication and installation, requiring precise quality control and sequencing to achieve the architect's vision.

The complexity extended beyond the facade aesthetics. The integration of the curtain wall with the metal cladding system, the thermal performance requirements, water management across the curved surfaces, and the logistics of coordinating Italian-fabricated components with on-site installation all demanded sophisticated envelope engineering and coordination between the design, fabrication, and construction teams. The building stands as a notable example of how ambitious architectural expression can drive both innovation and complexity in building envelope design and performance.
